Don’t we all?
Back in the 90’s we all started liking Nirvana and then backfilled a personality from there, pretending we knew everything there was to know about the bands that came before. I know I personally bullshitted myself through a lot of conversations by making some kind of second-hand reference to Nirvana being the band Mudhoney should have been.
It’s probably true that Mudhoney were the right band, in the right place, but a couple of years too early. Faith No More’s bombastically-produced ‘Epic’ was the real entry point that the mainstream had to anything remotely self-important and loud and not Guns’n’Roses back then. Everyone forgets this, but prod them a little and they’ll admit they remember the filmclip with the fish.
Kur(d)t didn’t like being famous all that much because he liked being the worst of all Gen-X traits – authentic. So authentic that he made Courtney take a new car back to the dealership because it wasn’t his clapped-out Volvo.
Back when I was a kid, I read an interview with the members of the Butthole Surfers where the interviewer asked if the Beatles would have become famous if they had been called The Butthole Surfers. The answer was that they didn’t know, but if the Beatles had BEEN The Butthole Surfers then nobody would have wanted to shoot John Lennon.
This Mudhoney video reminds me of that comment.
