For those companies that see communication as little more than a compliance cost – a mandatory nuisance – the chance to stop sending out a printed report will be a godsend. However the annual report is more than a cost of doing business. For the vast majority of companies, this is their once-a-year opportunity to push a message out to their stakeholders – to get an unmediated message out without having to rely on the vagaries of choice and chance.
One thing that fascinates me is the difference in mindset that causes some people to view communications and design (in this case) as a compliance cost, and others to look to it as an opportunity.
The business challenge for working designers and communicators is to be able to distinguish between these two types of clients, and to work as much as possible with the clients who see design as more than a cost.
